There is no single answer to «how far in advance should I book the Maldives» — there are three different markets inside one archipelago, and the 2026 transit shock moved all of them. The window belongs to a trio: a specific villa, a specific week, a specific route.
Ask «when to book the Maldives» and you will get a brochure answer: six months for the dry season. It is almost always wrong, because the question hides four axes that move independently: the weather season, the demand calendar, the villa category — and, in 2026, the route.
The dry season (November–April) and the demand calendar are not the same map. July–August are wet — but they are European school holidays, and arrivals prove it: August 2025 closed at 192,058, closer to October than to June. Category is the third axis: a standard beach villa and a two-bedroom family overwater live in different queues. The fourth axis is new: the 2026 closure of the European corridor through the Gulf moved both when people book and which packages survive.
| Month | 2025 arrivals | 2026 arrivals | YoY |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 214,863 | 224,788 | +4.6% |
| February | 214,091 | 247,722 — all-time record | +15.7% |
| March | 203,468 | 161,259 | −20.7% |
| April | 198,322 | 147,600 | −25.6% |
| May | 135,614 | 139,746 | +3.0% |
| June | 141,772 | 123,552 | −12.9% |
| July | 186,738 | 183,119 | −1.9% |
| August | 192,058 | 195,390 | +1.7% |
The desk keeps two grids, and they answer different questions. The structural grid is climatic and holds any year. The tactical grid is behavioural — it describes the 2026/27 season the way it actually trades after the route shock.
| Structural window | Months | Price vs peak | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Value | May–June, September | −40…−70% at strong resorts, mostly standard categories | Wet, quiet, new openings, families free of the school calendar |
| Family mini-peak | July–August | High-shoulder: far above June, no dump discounts | European school holidays; book family stock 6–9 months out |
| Shoulder | October–November | −20…−30% | Sea calming, European capacity returning |
| Peak | December–April | Rack; festive +30…+50% with 5–7 night minimums | Dry season; rare categories go first |
| Tactical window 2026/27 | Travel | Book | Logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Book Late, Fly Direct | Aug–Oct 2026 | Late, flexible rate only | Rain + residual caution = deepest packages; direct flights or proven hub connections |
| Book 8–12 weeks out | Nov–mid-Dec 2026 | Standard 2–3 months; pool overwater earlier | If the corridor holds, promotions collapse |
| Reserve Rare Early | Dec 20–Jan 5 | Rare categories 4–12 months by tier | No general shortage — a category shortage |
One-island-one-resort means a fixed, small villa count with no overflow wing. A rare category sells out before the resort does. This is not a sold-out destination — it is a sold-out SKU.
| What you book | May–Jun / Sep | Jul–Aug (schools) | Oct–mid-Dec | Dec 20–Jan 5 | Feb–Mar / Easter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard beach, mid/upper | 2–8 weeks; real last-minute 7–21 days | 3–4 months | 8–12 weeks | 3–6 months | 4–6 months |
| Overwater + pool | 2–4 months | 4–6 months | 3–5 months | 6–9 months | 6–9 months |
| Family 2–3 BR / connecting | 3–5 months | 6–9 months | 4–6 months | 8–12 months | 8–12 months |
| Icon / private island / buyout | 4–6 months, opening rates | 9–12 months | 6–9 months | Often 12 months, season opens | 9–12 months |
The published villa rate is not the bill. Add T-GST 17%, service 10%, green tax $12 per person per day, the seaplane at $500–900 return, departure fee and festive supplements: budget +25–40% over the public rate, with the tax load alone near +29% before transfers. A 40% September discount at a boat-access resort beats a 40% discount at a remote seaplane atoll — the transfer eats the value window. All-inclusive and transfer-included packages in the low season routinely beat «cheap bed & breakfast plus pier surprises». And festive minimum stays of 5–7 nights (10–14 at the top) multiply the whole True Stay Cost, not the rate.
